The DBE in South Carolina
Ø DBE ladies provided material support for Prince
Edward’s visit to Greenville in 2010.
ØMembers hosted an informational Afternoon Tea at Greenville
Library System’s Taylors’ Branch in recognition of the April 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Ø The DBE in South Carolina was founded in
1974 with the formation of the Redcoat Chapter in Greenville. This was followed ten years later by the Lake District Chapter
in Clemson.
Ø Each chapter has a biennially elected Board, headed by a Regent,
and meets on a monthly basis. Both chapters are administered by a State Board,
whose officers and delegates are elected from the membership of each chapter.
Ø Opportunities exist for members to attend periodic Southern
District, National, and Mountbatten House Board meetings. This allows us to make and renew acquaintances with our DBE sisters
from other states. From time to time we host the Southern District Meeting in Greenville.
Ø In addition to the society’s
main purpose of supporting Mountbatten House, South Carolina DBE fundraisers have also benefitted many local charities including
Meals on Wheels, Safe Harbor, and Cancer Society of Greenville County.
Ø Members have given talks to
local schools on various subjects, including life in London during the blitz, and the culture of the British.
Ø Support has been given to the
Greenville Scottish Games and Highland Festival both through members giving support through volunteering, and by taking part
in the colorful pre-Games Parade.
Ø Members have taken part in the
Greenville Christmas Parade through DBE’s links with the International Center for the Upstate, located in Greenville
City Hall.
Ø The ladies of the DBE in South
Carolina are always on the lookout for new ways to have fun while supporting their local communities.
Ø We are an extremely social organization,
which enjoys many social activities. We like to include husbands, and friends in these events as much as possible.
